Preface: I write this little book about investment companies because I believe it needs to be written for investors.

Most treaties on investment companies go into much detail on such points as the history of the investment company movement, public regulation, investment restrictions, accounting procedure, portfolio analysis, etc. These subjects are of interest to the analytical student, but the presentation is from the point of view of the professional analysis, rather than from that of the investor.

What the investor needs, and wants I believe, is a presentation of the subject from his point of view. He knows that the investment company institution is sound; that it must be sound because investment companies now operate under the Investment Company Act of 1940 which surrounds the shareholders’ assets with every possible protection. The investor knows furthermore that all nationally distributed investment companies are under the strict supervision of the Securities and Exchange Commission and various State Securities Commissions, and that these supervisory bodies provide additional safeguards for his protection.

But he also knows that there are many different kinds of investment companies — some of which may be appropriate for him and others of which may not.

The investor’s chief problem, therefore, is to decide which investment company or companies are suited to his own particular requirements.

The object of this study is to aid the investor in making that decision.
