Trading Tactics, In Keeping with Dow’s Intermediate and Long-Term Trends (1952) by George E. Schaefer

Alanpuri Trading, Los Angeles, 2013, Softcover, Reprint, Exact facsimile of the original 1952 first edition, originally self-published in 1952 by E. George Schaefer as a marketing piece to his new customers that were 4-week trial subscribers to his “Dow Theory Trader” letter, 65 pp.,

Contents: description from Schaefer’s Foreword, “The road to profits in the stock market is not difficult to follow when you have a dependable guide – a guide to help you employ correct trading tactics at the right time for greater profits. This “Trading Tactics” booklet is going to introduce you to the most reliable guide in the stock investment business. The Dow Theory. A better Dow theory – one that has been improved through technical research.

You will read how this improved Dow Theory has been used to capture great profits in this market. For over fifty years, the Dow Theory has served as a dependable guide to investors. It has shown countless numbers when to buy near the bottom – when to hold – and when to sell out near the top. This booklet discusses Dow theory procedure – shows how great profits were built up in two model accounts – and the reasons behind the investment procedure followed to accomplish these profits. Four “Dow Theory Trader” letters, in which we told our readers to “buy” just before large advances occurred, are given in this booklet in their entirety. For example, the June 18, 1949 issue (written four days after the 161.60 low), the July 15, 1950, issue (written two days after the Korean War reaction made it’s low), the December 9, 1950, letter (written at a time when stocks were being sold in response to the Chinese Communist war), and our June 29, 1951, letter, are all enclosed, and serve to show how this new technical research and the Dow theory were bullish, and highly profitable to investors in all of those instances.

Great advances in the market followed in each of these cases. A sample of our two model accounts, showing profits garnered by these methods, is also enclosed. A number of technical supplements to our regular weekly letter have also been included in this booklet. These were selected from past weekly bulletins because the writer felt that they were valuable to beginners who want to learn how technical factors are correlated with the Dow theory. They show how we have improved timing under the Dow theory by new methods. Some of these are the 200-Day Investment Line, Dow’s 50% Concept, Odd-Lot Index, Three-Phase Studies, Short Interest-Volume Ratio, and our Consensus Opinion Chart.

This “Trading Tactics” booklet was written primarily to show our many new readers who the Dow theory is applied for profit. Thousands of investors are using the method outlined – they have been tested, and have been proven of great value. The writer sincerely hopes that you, as a 4-week trial subscriber, will benefit from the principles, procedure, and trading tactics discussed. – signed, E. George Schaefer” — end. 65 pp.

Summary:

A Summary from Don Mack about this title: “Regarding details of the authors and the publisher of this Course in Trading, we know very little of the Wetsel Market Bureau and its team of technical writers who put it together. We have not been fortunate enough to find any references to their existence after the 1920s and 1930s. We do know that it was a highly regarded market advisory publication in its time, and judging by the quality of this Course, we have no doubt that it was a solidly based service that profited its subscribers with some excellent analytical teaching and information. From the original Introduction to the Course we learn that the company had changed hands about three years before the time of this publication (1934) and the new head of the company was Fred W. McClafferty, a name I must admit is unknown to me from that period. From the introductory comments to the Course, we have to surmise that the service was published bi-weekly, although, knowing the general pattern of market letter publishing, there is also the possibility that it was a weekly publication.”

Addendum to Tubbs’ Stock Market Correspondence Lessons by C. Ralph Dystant

Alanpuri Trading, Los Angeles, 2013. Softcover, Full Color Plate Reprint of the Original Manuscript. This 54 pp.

ADDENDA is for the NEW 1970 edition of Tubbs’ Stock Market Correspondence Lessons One to Fourteen that we believe Ralph Dystant published in 1970.

Upon uncovering this rare document we now better understand how it came to be that there are two versions of the Tubbs course reprint floating around. The first TEN Lesson course written and published by Frank Tubbs in the 30s or 40s, and the FOURTEEN Lesson course we believe Dystant published in 1970. Lessons Eleven by Fourteen appear to have been written and added by Dystant in 1970. It appears that Dystant re-typeset the entire Lesson One thru Fourteen Course for the 1970 publication, but for those re-sellilng the reprint for the last couple of decades, there has never been any mention that Ralph Dystant actually wrote the last four chapters and to our knowledge the existence of an ADDENDA for Lessons One to Eleven by Ralph Dystant may have been known by very few. It is clear to us now that Dr. Jerome Baumring, who originally owned this ADDENDUM knew, but decided to sell the Reprints of Lesson One through Fourteen Course with no reference to Ralph Dystant. We can only speculate as to Dr. Baumring’s reasons, but it may have been related to copyright infringement issues.

In this 54 pp. ADDENDA, Dystant attempts to update Tubb’s observations and in many cases uses current charts to illustrate his additonal observations. For those of you who own the Tubbs’ course you will see in Lesson Eleven that a 1970 chart of Savin verifies that Dystant wrote Lessons Eleven through Fourteen. We were also able to verify Dystant’s November 1970 copyright and description through the Catalog of Copyright Entries, Third Series: 1970: July-December. Book Condition: Fine, Contents: Lesson One Addenda 8 pp. (4 pages of text and pages of charts), Lesson Two Addenda 4 pp. (2 pages of text and 2 pages of charts, Lesson Three Addenda 14 pp. (2 pages of text, 3 pages of charts and 9 pages of tables), Lesson Four Addenda 7 pp. (1 page of text and 6 pages of charts), Lesson Five Addenda 1 pp. (1 page of text), Lesson Six Addenda 3 pp. (1 page of text and 2 pages of charts), Lesson Seven Addenda 3 pp. (2 pages of text and 1 page of charts), Lesson Eight Addenda 2 pp. (1 page of text and 1 page of charts), Lesson Nine Addenda 5 pp. (3 pages of text, 1 page of charts and 1 page of tables), Lesson Ten Addenda 1 pp. (1 page of text), Lesson Eleven Addenda (A Ralph Dystant Addenda to his own chapter) 4 pp. (1 page of text and 3 pages of charts), also included is a chart of the Transportation Averages from 1958 to 1970 with volume and a chart of Market Barometers for 1969 to 1970 that includes Utilities, Industrials and Transportation — end. 54 pp. EXTREMLY SCARCE CONTENT BY C. RALPH DYSTANT. Highly Collectible Reprint.
