The 80% Price Curve Plan of Stock Market Timing (1940) by Frank Vignola (pseud. M.V. Woods)

Alanpuri Trading, Los Angeles, 2023, Softcover, Reprint, Illustrated, An exact facsimile of the original 1940 by Frank Vignola (M.V. Woods), 15 pp.

Summary: THE 80% PRICE CURVE PLAN is a practical forecasting method for trading the minor price swings of the stock market. It’s purpose is to serve the trader as an indicator of when to buy and when to sell; to time the tops and bottoms of the many rallies and reactions that occur so often during the progress of a major bull or bear market, and to determine when the minor technical position of the stock market is strong or week.

The principle of the 80% Curve is logically based on a simple formula for measuring the extension of the price movement of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The purpose is to determine the ratio between supply and demand of stocks at any given time, it being most likely that after completing a move in one direction, the market will retrace a part if not all of its previous move.

Tests have shown that if the signals indicated by the 80% Curve are followed, minor market movements can be traded profitably when the market is in a trading area.

The method is self-contained and complete, and the trader has the choice of trading either the long or the short side of the market, or both, according to personal preference. The 80% Price Curve Plan can be used in connection with the Dow Theory for trading a large or primary market movements. A few suggestions are offered in the text, and no doubt new ways of synchronizing the 80% Curve with the Dow Theory, and other trading methods, will suggest themselves to the student.

Contents: The 80% Price Curve Plan, To Calculate the 80% Price Curve: Instructions for Recording Data, Example 1, Example 2, Interpretation and Analysis, RULE #1, Example C, Example D, Example E, RULE #2, Example F, Example G, Definition of a Trading Area, How to Protect a Market Commitment, RULE #3, Example J, Example K, Primary and Secondary Market Movements, Example #4, Example #5, Detailed Summary of Signals, Example Showing the 80% Curve as Applied to U.S. Steel, Supplement, A Dow Theory Study, — end. 15 pp.

S/D 3 Formula 3-81 Trading System (1940s – 1964) by Henry Wheeler Chase

Alanpuri Trading, Los Angeles, CA, 2022, Hardcover, Reprint, 60 pp., An exact facsimile of this original course material and update bulletins privately published by Henry Wheeler Chase sometime between the mid 1940s and early 1960s. The last update bulletin included in this title is dated December 1963. There are 130 numbered instructions, about 25 pages long, that make up the bulk of the system. Additionally there are 12 pages of “codes” to decipher in order to correctly execute the system. This edition also includes 6 different update bulletins totaling 16 pages. Extremely Scarce Content.

Contents: The S/D 3 Formula 3-81 (Tr. Mk. Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.), The Weekly S/D 3 Record, Preparation of the Weekly S/D 3-81 Record, SECTION 1, Factor One, Factor Two, Factor Three, Factor Four, Factor Five, SECTON 2, Factor Six, Factor Seven, CODE CP Factors 4 and 5 Revised 1963, Examples, CODE CK (re-issued 1964), FACTOR EIGHT, IMPORTANT (Z) POSITION, Measuring Periods, Position Diagrams, RED Position Diagram, BLUE Position Diagram, RELATIVE POSITION KEYS, COMBINATION KEYS, Factor Eight Answer, FACTOR 9, S/D 3-81 ACTION SIGNALS, EXECUTIONS, SUGGESTIONS, CODE PD Position Diagrams for RED and BLUE, CODE PK, CODE PK -0- RED, CODE PK -1- RED, CODE PK -2- RED, CODE PK -3- RED, CODE PK -4- RED, CODE PK -5- BLUE Z, CODE PK -6- BLUE Z, CODE PK -7- BLUE Z, CODE PK -8- BLUE Z, CODE PK -9- BLUE Z, Bulletin #4 BY-PASSING 1957, CODE PK – Bulletin #1 Revised May 1962 (11 pp.), PROTECTIVE STOP BULLETIN #3 Special BUY-STOP (weekly record) June 22, 1962, PROTECTIVE STOP BULLETIN #4 Special SELL-STOP (weekly record) June 22, 1962, PROTECTIVE STOP BULLETIN #5 Arbitrary BS and SS (no date), USE OF THE S/D 3-31 TRADING CONTROL (no date), 3-36 Trading Control Blank Worksheet, Formula S/D 3-81 Computation Blank Worksheet, Instructions, CODE CC-E / CODE VP (SD Formulae), CODE VP December 1963 — end.

Summary: Because Chase never published his work publicly, it is near impossible to find any of his writings although his name is widely know in the trading community. This is the first time this title has been published to the public. It’s extremely rare and multilayered trading system written and updated over the course of many years. We are uncertain if this particular S/D 3 Formula 3-81 system is complete or if there were other update bulletins that we simply don’t have. We’ve done our best to piece it all together. While we can’t imagine anyone using a system like this off-the-shelf, for students of the markets and bored quants this might be a very fun puzzle to play with.

Alanpuri Trading, Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A., 2015. Softcover. Reprint, exact facsimile of the Original 1949 Book, plus 14 pages of full page charts. 31 pp.

Summary: A complete method for determining the future trend of stock prices that will enable you to properly “time” your purchases and sales for maximum profits.

Contents: TABLE OF CONTENTS: Preface, 1. Introduction and Definition of Terms, 2. Dow’s Theory, 3. Pressure Keys, 4. Odd Lot Indices, 5. Moving Average, 6. Moving Volume, 7. Daily Buying – Selling Key, 8. Weekly Buying – Selling Key, 9.Selecting the Proper Stocks, 10. Summary and Sound Stock Market Strategy, Appendix. — end. 31 pp. plus 14 page of full page charts. EXTREMELY SCARCE TITLE.

Preface: The material presented in this treatise on Stock Market analysis and techniques is the outgrowth of years of research and experience in applying the principles to actual market situations.

In the early 1930’s my brokerage account was shrinking and almost every transaction completed resulted in a loss. This situation stimulated my imagination. Having an analytical type of mind, I immediately began studying to find out what the trouble was. This was easy since, like most traders, I was acting on what I thought or what some friend told me the market was going to do. Of course, it usually did the opposite and when a margin call came around, I’d sell out and take another loss.

Following the Spring rise of 1933, I limited my trading to 20 share units while I applied the findings of my research projects. It was not until 1944 that I again became an active trader. This time, I paid no attention to what I heard, what I thought, or what influence politics, acts of God, wars and news of the day might have on the stock market. My guide for action is, what do the “KEYS” have to say? Are they bullish, bearish or neutral?

When our positions are based upon mechanical devices, all personal feelings and opinions can be eliminated. Market trading becomes a pleasure and a source of pride since the profits are large and the occasional loss is small.

It is my hope that you will profit by a thorough study of the material presented within.

I will welcome suggestions and criticisms.

Summary: An elementary dissertation on the inadequacy of stock market analysis methods employed by the average amateur speculation enthusiast, plus a detailed presentation of two trend analysis techniques and some observations on profit making. Written by the founder of Trendex and the originator of the Coppock Curve / Coppock Indicator.

Contents: For those of you who don’t know about Edwin Coppock (E.S.C. Coppock), he was the founder of Trendex, a service in the 60’s and 70’s that specialized in relative strength work in both stocks and industry groups. Coppock developed the “Coppock Curve,” or “Coppock Indicator to calculate buy signals for long-term investors. The equation: Coppock = WMA[10] of (ROC[14] + ROC[11]). The Coppock indicator first appeared in Barron’s Magazine in October 15, 1962. It was noted in a 2001 interview with John Bollinger in Active Trader Magazine (of Bollinger Band fame) that Coppock’s work with computers and the ability to “trade without emotion” became a catalyst for Bollinger’s technical analysis work. — 52 pages, REPRINT, Extremely Scarce Title by Coppock.
